The Women’s Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation’s aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.

Meidrim WI meets on the 1st Monday of the month at 7.15pm in the Youth Hall. We have a variety of speakers, covering a range of topics and also organise a number of outings, usually including a meal and run a Bingo Night open to anyone – young and old. This year our programme includes speakers on Costume Construction, Forensic Science, a Gamesmaker from the London Olympics and a visit to Cwm Deri Vineyard. There really is something for everyone.

Meidrim WI is also a member of the Rebecca Group, where local Institutes meet twice a year, giving an opportunity to socialise with members of other Institutes. Along with Meidrim The Rebecca Group consists of Institutes from Bancyfelin, Glandwr, Llanboidy, Llanwinio and Trelech.

As a member of your local WI you can also take part in many of the Sir Gâr Carmarthenshire Federation events, which include a range of sporting competitions, an annual quiz, a fashion show, book clubs, guided walks and a range of trips.
Primarily the WI is about friendship. Just come along and make new friends and try out something you never thought you would do! All welcome.
